~ Mike Hogue drowned in Ocean View ~

On July 15th, 2008, tragedy struck the beaches of Ocean View.

Mike Hogue, 50 , drowned early Tuesday afternoon. Mike was swimming with a friend when he disappeared into the rough waters.  Friends and witnesses said it took 20-25 minutes before he was found.

Police initially received the call about a missing swimmer at about 5:16pm and responded to the location to begin a search. The victim, Mike Hogue of the 3300 block of East Ocean View Avenue was pulled from the water at 5:43pm.

Attempts were made by rescue workers and friends to revive him but it was too late. He was pronounced dead at DePaul Medical Center at 6:28pm. Mike leaves behind 2 children.

Mike was known to be a strong swimmer though friends mentioned that rough water and a cold medicine he was taking may have played a part in his drowning. Friend Tim Davis commented that the incident “builds a whole new respect for this water out here.”

The incident is under investigation.

A sad ending to a day at the beach. The bay looks very tranguil and placid even on a day when it’s rough it seems safe but what most people don’t realize is water on top does not reflect the water below, even at 4-6 feet deep. The two things in our beautiful bay that are not known by most 1) the bottom does not slope from shallow to deep 2) the water below is flowing much faster than the water on the surface.
Sadly to late for Mike Houge but never take the water for granted. Panic usually drowns most people.
